A 2011 analysis shows that 58% of physicians failed to recognize incapacity in patients. In this webinar, Dr. Donn Dexter, a practicing neurologist with the Mayo Clinic, will review the four components of decision-making capacity, discuss why physicians may fail to evaluate a patient’s capacity, list challenges stemming from the evanescent quality of capacity, and describe some clinical capacity tools and their applicability in different scenarios.

Following the activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify strategies for implementing advance care planning for patients across the health care continuum.
- Determine the most appropriate screening tools for evaluating a patient’s decision-making capacity.
Method of Participation
Participants view the presentation and listen to the synchronized audio of the recorded lecture. After completing the activity, participants must complete an evaluation and a post-test in which they must answer at least 75% of the answers correctly in order to receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The participant cannot proceed to request credit until this score is achieved.
